October 26th 2020 - Masha Vlasova, Braydee Euliss
Masha Vlasova premiered two films “The Imaginary Kaleidoscope”, and “Mr. Hutcherson and His Fantastic Cat Menagerie”
The Imaginary Kaleidoscope is composed of a series of close-ups of animal sculptures encountered at eye
level. We observe them looking at us. The male voiceover reads a monologue quilted
with quotations from the western canon in which the author ventriloquizes an animal
voice (i.e. Berger, Kafka, Rilke, Bishop, Tolstoy). Gathered across the Northeast,
Midwest, and the South the animal sculptures are dinky monuments to a desire for
reintegration and a collective place-less portrait of Americana.
Mr. Hutcherson and his Fantastic Cat Menagerie The film zooms into one man’s lawn on which a large collection of life-size large cats is
displayed. The cats are well-maintained and beautiful; they have memorial plaques,
which include names of departed and living relatives, and lights that illuminate them at
night, giving the collection the quality of a memorial.
